Pakistan Secures Fuel Supply for March Amid Gulf War Crisis
In the wake of rising Middle East tensions and fluctuating global oil prices, rumors of a petrol shortage have been circulating across Pakistan. However, the government has officially stepped in to clear the air.
During a high-level meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, the government confirmed that Pakistan has fully secured its fuel requirements for March 2026, with supplies expected to last well into mid-April.
1. Current Stock Levels: The Facts
According to the latest briefing provided to the Senate Standing Committee on Petroleum, Pakistan is not "running dry." Here is the current breakdown of our national reserves:
Petrol: Sufficient for 27 days.
Diesel: Sufficient for 21 days.
Jet Fuel (JP-1): Sufficient for 14 days.
Despite the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz and delays in shipments from Arab countries, two tankers carrying fresh stocks of petrol and diesel have recently arrived at the port, stabilizing the national inventory.
2. Why the "Panic Buying" is Dangerous
The government and OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority) have issued a stern warning against panic buying and hoarding. When thousands of people rush to petrol pumps at once, it creates an "artificial shortage."
Hoarding Crackdown: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered a nationwide crackdown on any petrol pump owners found involved in illegal stockpiling.
Licence Cancellation: Any station creating artificial queues or refusing to sell fuel will face immediate closure and cancellation of their licence.
3. Rising Prices vs. Supply Stability
While the supply is secure, the price remains a challenge. Due to the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, global crude oil has jumped from $72 to $115 per barrel. To manage this, the government recently increased prices by Rs. 55 per litre, but the Finance Minister emphasized that this move was necessary to ensure that imports continue smoothly without a total collapse of the supply chain.
4. What’s Next for April?
The government is already exploring alternative routes and suppliers, including talks with Russia and Azerbaijan, to ensure that April remains crisis-free. While LNG (Gas) supplies from Qatar have seen some suspension, the focus remains on keeping the transport and power sectors running.
The Bottom Line
There is enough fuel at the depots. If the public avoids unnecessary stockpiling, there will be no shortage at the pumps. Stay calm, buy only what you need, and ignore social media rumors.
