5G in Pakistan: The Digital Revolution Begins in 2026

The long-awaited dream of high-speed connectivity has finally become a reality. As of March 2026, Pakistan has officially entered the 5G era. This isn't just a bump in internet speed; it’s a massive leap forward for the country’s digital economy, healthcare, and education sectors.

In this post, we’ll dive into the latest updates on the 5G rollout, which cities are live, and what you need to do to experience the future of mobile internet.

The Big Update: 5G Spectrum Auction Concluded

On March 10, 2026, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) successfully completed the 5G spectrum auction. The government generated over $507 million, selling 480 MHz of spectrum. This auction has nearly tripled the mobile network capacity in Pakistan, moving from 274 MHz to over 750 MHz.

Which Networks are Offering 5G?

The "Big Three" have secured their licenses and started their phased rollouts:

  1. Jazz: The frontrunner in the auction, securing 190 MHz. Jazz has already activated 5G across 180 sites in major urban centers.

  2. Zong: Known for its early 5G trials in 2019, Zong has commercially launched services in 16+ cities and plans to upgrade 1,000 more sites this year.

  3. Ufone: Secured 180 MHz of spectrum and is currently in the process of activating its 5G nodes in provincial capitals.

Live Cities: Can You Use 5G Today?

The rollout is happening in a phased manner. Currently, 5G signals are active in high-density areas of the following cities:

  • Islamabad & Rawalpindi

  • Lahore (Key areas: Gulberg, DHA, Johar Town, and Model Town)

  • Karachi (Major business hubs and Clifton/DHA)

  • Peshawar

  • Quetta

  • Multan

  • Faisalabad

Note: Even if you are in these cities, coverage may vary by street and indoor/outdoor locations as the infrastructure is still being densified.

What Speeds Should You Expect?

While 4G LTE typically gives you 15–30 Mbps in Pakistan, 5G is a different beast entirely.

  • Current Testing: Initial users are reporting speeds between 150 Mbps to 400 Mbps.

  • Future Potential: Once the network stabilizes, we expect speeds to hit 800 Mbps+ in ideal conditions.

  • Latency: The "lag" in gaming and video calls will drop from 50ms+ to roughly 10-15ms.

How to Get Started with 5G in Pakistan

To enjoy the 5G experience, you don't just need a signal; you need the right setup:

  1. 5G Compatible Device: Ensure your phone supports the N78 (3.5 GHz) or N41 (2.6 GHz) bands. Most flagship Samsungs, iPhones (12 and above), and newer Xiaomi/Oppo models are ready.

  2. Software Update: Keep an eye out for a "Carrier Settings" or System Update. PTA and telcos are pushing updates to "unlock" 5G on local handsets.

  3. Sim Card: Most 4G SIMs are 5G-ready, but some older SIMs may need a replacement at a service center.

  4. Enable 5G: Go to Settings > Mobile Networks > Preferred Network Type and select 5G/4G/3G (Auto).

Conclusion

The launch of 5G in Pakistan marks a "wonderful beginning," as stated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. While it will take another 12–18 months for 5G to reach smaller towns and villages, the foundations of a "Digital Pakistan" are now firmly in place.
